Tura, July 9: Work on the Doppler Weather Radar in Tura is expected to commence soon as the final site for installation has been cleared by the IMD in coordination with the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority and the District Disaster Management Authority.
Authorities said the facility will bolster disaster preparedness and response capabilities in the region.

The inspection was conducted on July 8 at Albella Chidekgre under Rongram C&RD Block by officials from the IMD headquarters in New Delhi, the IMD Meteorological Centre in Shillong, the District Disaster Management Office, Rongram C&RD Block, and representatives of Pattern India Limited, Chennai. The Nokma of Albella Chidekgre and local residents also participated in the site visit.
Once operational, the radar is expected to significantly strengthen weather surveillance across the Garo Hills by providing more accurate rainfall and storm monitoring, improving weather forecasting, and enhancing early warning systems for disasters such as heavy rain, thunderstorms and flash floods.
