Shillong, July 11: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday reviewed the monsoon situation across Meghalaya with Deputy Commissioners and directed district administrations to remain on high alert, ensure timely rescue and relief operations, and restore road connectivity on priority as heavy rain continues to affect parts of the state.
The review meeting, held through video conference, assessed the impact of continuous rainfall since the first week of July, which has affected 32 villages, mainly in the Garo Hills and parts of the Khasi Hills. The damage has largely been caused by landslides, landslips, flash floods and localised flooding. No loss of life has been reported during the current spell.
With the India Meteorological Department placing Meghalaya under an orange alert and forecasting widespread rain, including heavy to very heavy spells at isolated places until around July 15, the Chief Minister instructed officials not to become complacent.
“He stressed close coordination among the district administrations, the block-level response teams and the line departments concerned, so that any incident is attended to quickly and that field personnel and machinery are kept ready for immediate clearance and response,” the press release stated.
Sangma also reviewed erosion of the approach road to the Mineng Bailey Bridge near Gasuapara in South Garo Hills, where traffic has been restricted to light vehicles as a precaution and an alternative route is being used. He directed that inspection and temporary restoration work be completed at the earliest.
The Chief Minister further instructed officials to ensure that relief and assistance reach affected families without delay, essential supplies and services are maintained, and district administrations continue regular reporting to the State government.
The government has advised the public to avoid landslide-prone stretches and flooded streams, follow local advisories, postpone non-essential travel on hill roads during heavy rain and observe lightning safety precautions during thunderstorms.
“Restoration and relief work is continuing, and the situation continues to be monitored closely. Further updates will be issued as required,” the release said.
