Hek against worship at public offices

Shillong, July 15: In the wake of a controversy over the KSU’s demand for removal of a temple from the premises of the CBI office here, BJP leader Alexander Laloo Hek has made it clear that government offices should not house places of worship.

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded for demolition of the “illegal” temple inside the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office premises within a week’s time.

Refusing to directly comment on the KSU’s demand, the Pynthorumkhrah MLA on Wednesday offered his “personal view” saying, “As all communities work in one organisation, it should not have any worship place.”

Places of worship should not be inside the workplace, he said.

“Worship place should be in your own private place or you can go to the identified worship places, not in public places,” he added.

The legislator argued that government offices are public spaces accessed by people from all communities.

“All kinds of public will go there. Why do you want to create unnecessary inconvenience for people working in that organisation or in any other organisation,” Hek said.
