Ready for dialogue on Shillong Ropeway: Govt

Concern over environmental impact

Shillong, July 30: In the wake of public apprehension over possible environmental impact of Shillong Ropeway project, the state government has expressed its readiness for dialogue with stakeholders in this regard.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira said the government is ready for further consultations.

However, he pointed out, all required clearances for the project have already been obtained.

Replying to a query on public concern over tree felling for the project and possible water scarcity, Shira said the project was initiated during the tenure of the previous Tourism Minister and due procedures were followed.

“That was not done during my time… I have been informed that everything has been done properly and all the necessary permissions have been obtained from the authorities concerned,” he said.

On calls for more dialogue, the Minister said the government would engage stakeholders if needed.

“Consultation will take place if there is anything. I think it is necessary to dispel all these apprehensions, and sometimes the misunderstanding and information gap as well,” he said.

Underscoring need for further consensus on the project, he said the sections criticising the project and the government should be involved in the further consultations.

Meanwhile, he said forest clearance and an environment certificate had been secured prior to commencement of the work.
