Missing youth traced in Karnataka, reunited with family

Shillong, Aug 10: A 24-year-old job-seeking youth from Muktapur in East Jaintia Hills district went missing for over three weeks before he was traced to Karnataka and reunited with his family on Monday.

Disappearance of the youth, Kwis Sumer, since July 15 triggered a sustained search involving state governments and community representatives.

Following a memorandum in this regard on July 27, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took up the matter with Karnataka government, setting in motion an inter-state coordination to trace Sumer.

A Meghalaya Police team led by IPS officer Lovish Garg travelled to Bengaluru along with representatives of Sumer’s clan and worked with senior Karnataka Police officers to reconstruct his last known movements.

Meanwhile, he managed to establish contact with his family through social media with the assistance of one Kavi Kumar, who had provided him shelter and support during his stay in Karnataka.

Subsequently, a joint police team took custody of Sumer to Tiptur in Tumakuru district.

He went to Karnataka in search of employment.

He was reunited with his family and clan members in Shillong on Monday. He will now return to his home in Muktapur situated along Indo-Bangla border.

Sumer expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister and everyone involved in bringing him home.

The Chief Minister, meanwhile, thanked Bengaluru Police and the community stakeholders who assisted with the search.

The state government also acknowledged the role of Dr D Rockyer L Nonglait, who facilitated the initial communication with the Chief Minister’s Office, and Kavi Kumar, whose decision to shelter Sumer and help him reconnect with his family proved crucial.
