Shillong, Aug 17: More than 300 job seekers turned up at ITI Compound in Tura on Monday, as the Meghalaya Skills Development Society (MSDDS) organised a recruitment drive aimed at connecting skilled and qualified youth directly with employers.
The drive brought together employers from the healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, wellness, technology and other sectors, offering candidates a range of employment opportunities both within Meghalaya and across the country.
Speaking during the recruitment drive, Sabina D. Sangma, Skill Development Officer, said the initiative was focused on bridging the gap between job seekers and employers while creating wider career opportunities for young people.
Among the participating companies and organisations were Apollo Hospitals, [24]7.ai, Yashoda Hospitals, Apollo Tyres, Cadabam’s Group, S.P. Apparels Ltd., Tattva Wellness, BON, Cosmos, Saathiya, Zivaya Spa, OSM – Omega Seiki Mobility, Accel Skill, SUEZ, ITC Hotels, Ajith Enterprises, Pride Plaza Hotel Ahmedabad, 2COMS, Aspirea and Taco Bell, among others.
The vacancies span a wide range of sectors. In healthcare, positions include staff nurse, assistant nurse, direct nursing professional, nursing aid, healthcare assistant, certified nursing/care assistant, general duty assistant, physiotherapist assistant and caregiver, including home-based care.
The hospitality and food-service sector offers opportunities for waiters and waitresses, commis, kitchen assistants, housekeeping staff, front-office executives, guest-relations staff, F&B service and production staff, kitchen leaders, senior CDPs, café team members and hospitality interns.
Candidates can also apply for manufacturing and production roles, including machine, line and assembly operators, sewing machine operators, factory operators, shoe assemblers and warehouse workers. Opportunities are also available in the wellness, spa and beauty sector for wellness therapists, beauty therapists, senior spa therapists and healers.
Sabina urged parents to encourage their children to actively participate in such recruitment drives and make use of employment opportunities available to them.
She also announced that similar recruitment drives will be held across eight blocks of Meghalaya, taking employment opportunities closer to young people in different parts of the state.
In West Garo Hills, upcoming drives are scheduled to be held at Tikrikilla, Rongram, Selsella, Dadenggre, Gambegre, Demdema, Dalu and Batabari.
The recruitment programme is also opening opportunities beyond Meghalaya. With several participating employers offering jobs in other parts of India, candidates have the option to pursue employment outside the state and expand their career prospects.
Speaking exclusively to Hub News, several candidates said they attended the drive because they were currently unemployed and actively seeking work.
One candidate welcomed the range of vacancies available and appreciated the government for bringing the recruitment process directly to Tura. Another said they were prepared to travel anywhere for employment and welcomed opportunities to work outside Meghalaya.
The candidates also expressed appreciation to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and the officials involved in organising the drive, while urging other young people to take advantage of similar opportunities rather than allowing available vacancies to go unfilled.
A key advantage for candidates was that the recruitment process was free of cost, allowing job seekers to attend interviews and explore multiple opportunities without paying recruitment-related fees.
The process included registration, counselling, document verification and interviews, with candidates receiving guidance on available positions and employer requirements before proceeding to interviews.
Sabina expressed gratitude to the Government of Meghalaya and the Chief Minister for their continued support towards employment generation and skill development.
With hundreds of candidates turning up in Tura and more recruitment drives planned across the state, the initiative seeks to strengthen the link between qualified youth looking for work and employers seeking skilled manpower.
For many of those who attended, the recruitment drive offered more than just a job interview it provided a direct pathway to new employment and career opportunities.
