Shillong, Aug 18: The Jaintia Students’ Union on Tuesday moved the NGT Eastern Zone Bench in Kolkata against Shree Cement’s proposed 217.394-hectare mining project in Jaintia Hills.
A JSU delegation led by education secretary Bocheru Mi Pohsnem submitted their evidence to the tribunal.
The move comes after the expiry of a 10-day ultimatum to the state government.
“If the NGT can ban local coal mining—stripping our people of their livelihoods for the sake of the environment—then the exact same rules MUST apply to the proposed corporate mining project by Shree Cement,” the JSU said.
Along with the NGT plea, the union said it will file in the High Court seeking accountability for “gross dereliction of duty.”
