31 vehicles damaged during KSU rally: Police

Rally permitted with undertaking that it would be peaceful

Shillong, Aug 19: The state police have termed the violence during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) black-flag bike rally a “total violation of the law of the land” and vowed strict action against the perpetrators.

According to police, as many as 31 vehicles were vandalised and civilians were assaulted during the rally that turned violent across several parts of Shillong.

“31 vehicles were vandalized, people walking on the streets were beaten up without any reason, and a bus ferrying children was also affected during the protest. One vehicle was set ablaze,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Wednesday.

Earlier, the rally was granted prior permission, after receiving an undertaking from organisers that it would remain peaceful.

“We did not expect this to happen because they were granted permission and had given an undertaking. It is sad that this has affected the peace and tranquillity in the city,” he added.

The SP said the attacks have left residents anxious and fearful.

“Till now, people are still calling to enquire if it is safe to move out or not. Citizens are frightened,” Syiem said.

He assured strict action against those involved.

“This is a total violation of the law of the land. We will take necessary action on this matter,” he said.
