‘Drugs wala Punjab’: BJP demands resignation of CM Bhagwant Mann over suicide bid by Sangrur man

New Delhi, Sep 21: The BJP on Monday demanded the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann after a man allegedly attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance outside the Sangrur district administrative complex, claiming that a local sarpanch had threatened him after he shared a video of drug supply in his village.

Jagseer Singh alias Jagga, a resident of Namol village in Sangrur, claimed he had approached police, but no action was taken.

BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia hit out at the Punjab chief minister over the incident, alleging he had turned the state into “drugs wala Punjab”.

“Forget effective action against drug mafias, those complaining against drug abuse are being beaten and tortured by police at the beshest of Bhagwant Mann in Punjab,” Bhatia said at a press conference at the BJP headquarters here.

“Bhagwant Mann should immediately resign from the post of Punjab chief minister,” the BJP leader said, demanding a CBI probe into the incident.

Jagseer Singh is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Patiala after the alleged suicide bid on Sunday.

The incident came close on the heels of the alleged suicide by a Dalit man, Gulzar Singh, in Sangrur on September 7. His family alleged he was harassed and subjected to casteist slurs for questioning Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema about supply of drugs, during an event in Dirba.

The alleged suicide snowballed into a major controversy, with opposition parties demanding action against the finance minister, and his resignation. (PTI)
