Shillong, Sept 28: Two women suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals and allegedly without valid documents were detained in East Khasi Hills after the vehicle they were travelling in was intercepted at Nongtrai.
According to the FIR registered at Mawsynram Police Station, Jhinuk Hijrani, 22, and Priyanka Kumari, 20, were intercepted while travelling in a vehicle bearing registration number ML 05 AC 5971.
The case has been registered under Sections 12(1)(a) and (c) of the Passport Act, 1967.
The investigation has been entrusted to SI Rochestar Warshong of Mawsynram Police Station.
Meanwhile, the Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) Nongtrai Unit, in a statement issued on Monday, said it had alerted the authorities after receiving information about suspected illegal entry through a restricted area on September 26.
Demanding a detailed probe, the HYC Nongtrai Unit urged the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to ascertain and verify the nationality of the two persons, examine their travel documents, establish the route taken for entry, and determine if there was any facilitation or involvement of other individuals or networks.
“The identity, nationality and circumstances of the two persons must be established strictly through due process of law, with a proper and transparent investigation,” it said.
The HYC also appealed to residents of border areas to remain vigilant and “immediately report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest police station or concerned authorities.”
