Hek urges Govt to check drug menace

Shillong, Oct 7: The BJP, an ally of in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, has stressed that the MDA government must take full responsibility to eradicate the “growing drug menace that led to surge in crimes” in the state.

“There are so many crimes happening because of people taking drugs. It is a dangerous trend,” Senior BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA AL Hek said on Wednesday while urging the government to take appropriate measures to check drub abuse and drug smuggling in the state.

“As the MDA government, the Chief Minister and Health Minister should take responsibility on how to control this drug issue that is happening,” he said.

Hek said many families are affected by the drug menace, making it a “very dangerous trend” for the society.

“That is why so many crimes are also taking place,” he said while referring to crimes taking place in his Nongmynsong constituency and elsewhere.

According to Hek, growing drug menace played a significant part behind many of the crimes.

On the possible remedy, Hek said, “The government has to take full responsibility to ensure how to eradicate the drug menace.”

He also underlined community-level intervention involving Dorbar Shnong and local volunteers in checking drug abuse.

“If we find anyone creating problems because of drug addiction, we should take them to task… to ensure they will not repeat it,” he said.

Hek also urged the parents and citizens to come forward in eradicating drug addiction from the society.
