Nepal’s only billionaire Binod Chaudhary elected Nepali Congress vice president

Kathmandu, Oct 12: Nepal’s only billionaire Binod Chaudhary was elected vice president of the Nepali Congress, the country’s main opposition party, along with Chandra Bhandari and Madhu Acharya at its 15th general convention here.

The election for the three vice-president posts was held on October 9, with the results declared on Monday.

Chaudhary, a prominent industrialist and chairman of the Chaudhary Group, is one of Nepal’s most influential business figures.

The Nepali Congress has played a central role in the country’s politics and has headed several governments since the restoration of multiparty democracy in 1990.

The party’s 15th general convention, which began on October 4, is tasked with electing a 232-member central executive committee, comprising 171 elected members and 61 nominated by the party president.

The party’s office-bearers include one president, one senior vice president, three vice presidents, three general secretaries and 13 joint general secretaries.

On October 10, Gagan Thapa was elected party president with 93.88 per cent of the vote. Bishwo Prakash Sharma was elected senior vice president unopposed, while Pushpa Bhusal was elected vice president under the women’s quota.

Udaya Shumsher Rana, Pradeep Paudel and Dila Sangraula have been elected general secretaries, while vote counting for other positions, including joint general secretaries and central committee members, is under way. (PTI)
