Flagship initiatives for safe motherhood, early childhood development draw
Shillong, Oct 12: In a huge complement for Meghalaya government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought the state’s development frameworks to be shared with other states as ‘best practices’.
The measures that have drawn PM Modi’s attention are multiple targeted interventions to transform child care and ensure safe mother motherhood in Meghalaya.
Informing this on Monday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma described his recent meeting with the Prime Minister as an immensely satisfying moment that underscored Meghalaya’s growing stature on the national stage.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), in coordination with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, formally requested the Chief Minister to present Meghalaya’s social transformation framework, particularly its flagship initiatives in public health, social welfare and early childhood care, for consideration and adoption by other states.

Under Sangma’s leadership, Meghalaya has introduced several targeted interventions, including a safe motherhood programme, efforts to reduce child malnutrition, and early childhood development initiatives described as first-of-their-kind in the country.
The state’s efforts include interventions aimed at reducing infant stunting and wasting, alongside measures to strengthen maternal and child healthcare and improve early childhood care.
Sangma said the request reflected Meghalaya’s growing role in national development and its efforts to strengthen grassroots governance, healthcare innovation and inclusive social development.
Emphasising the importance of political will and administrative commitment, the Chief Minister said the state’s achievements demonstrated that “where there is a will, there is a way”.
He expressed pride that Meghalaya was not merely participating in the country’s development but was also contributing models that other states could study and adapt to their local needs.
