ACHIK demands action against smuggling of goods to Bangladesh

Shillong, Dec 29: The Tura City Unit of the Achik Conscious Holitstically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has filed a police complaint seeking action against alleged smuggling of blankets toward Bangladesh via Tura in West Garo Hills.

The complaint submitted before the officer in-charge Tura police station on December 27, 2025, follows eyewitness accounts of a suspicious truck transporting a large quantity of blankets.

It informed that the Tura Police Station has acknowledged receipt of the complaint and is expected to launch a detailed inquiry into the alleged smuggling operation.

The letter stated that in the midnight of December 27, members of the ACHIK observed a truck bearing registration AS01TC9745 heavily loaded with blankets moving through the Araimile area.

The driver, when questioned, stated the cargo was headed for Mahadeo, South Garo Hills, but later admitted the blankets were intended for smuggling into Bangladesh.

The driver also displayed a mobile phone containing records of illegal toll collections, prompting the activists to request confiscation of the device for investigation.

“(We therefore) urge the police to verify the source and destination of the goods, examine E‑way bills, GST documents, invoices, and transport permits, and

initiate legal action if any violations are detected,” the ACHIK said.

The organization highlighted concerns over revenue loss and national security, noting that such illicit trade could strengthen the economy of a neighboring country through unlawful means at a time of heightened tension with Bangladesh.
