Shillong, Feb 3: Keeping in view reports of smuggling of fish across the international border from Bangladesh, prohibition has been imposed on activities of trade of such fish in East Khasi Hills district.
In an order, the district administration stated that transportation, storage, sale or distribution of fish illegally imported from Bangladesh has been prohibited under the jurisdiction of the district.
The order also prohibited use of any vehicle, vessel, boat, or conveyance in the transport of such illegally imported fish without valid legal documents.
Warning against involvement in any activities of fish smuggling, the order prohibited any assistance, harbouring, or facilitating individuals or groups involved in such illegal activities.
“This order has been issued in view of reports received that illegal transportation of fish from Bangladesh is taking place through various border routes, riverine channels, roads, and market points within the state,” it stated.
Cautioning that such illegal items may enter the district through various channels, the order mentioned that illegal transportation and entry of unregulated fish is a violation of Customs, Import-Export, and other relevant Food Safety regulations.
Such activities also have the potential of introducing diseased or restricted species, it stated.
Expressing concern over risk posed to public health, the order said, “Such illegal, unchecked and uncertified sale and distribution of these foreign-origin fish pose a serious risk to public health and sanitation.”
It also may negatively impact the bio-security of local aquatic ecosystem and cause economic loss to legitimate fish traders and the state government, the order stated.
“Any person violating this order shall be liable for action under Section 223 of the BNS, 2023 and other relevant provisions of law including the Customs Act, Foreigners Act, Passport Act etc.,” it stated.
