Advisory issued for Shillong-Pynursla-Dawki road over landslide threat

Shillong, June 11: The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills has urged all tourists, visitors and commuters planning to travel to Dawki to avoid the Shillong-Pynursla-Dawki road until further notice, citing serious safety concerns due to landslides, falling rocks and ongoing construction work.

The advisory issued by the Deputy Commissioner & Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority on Thursday said the route currently poses a high risk of untoward incidents.

In view of public safety, the administration has asked people to opt for the alternative route via Shillong–Jowai–Amlarem–Dawki, which is considered safer for reaching Dawki and other adjoining tourist destinations at this time.

The administration has requested travelers to refrain from unnecessary movement through the affected stretch and to follow instructions issued by local authorities and traffic personnel on the ground.

Officials also advised commuters to check weather forecasts and road conditions before beginning their journey, and to exercise extra caution while driving, particularly during spells of heavy rainfall.

For any emergency or disaster-related assistance, people have been asked to dial 112.Dawki, known for the crystal-clear Umngot River on the India-Bangladesh border, attracts a large number of tourists, especially during the summer months.

With the monsoon setting in, the district administration said the advisory will remain in force until the road is deemed safe for travel and construction activities are completed.
