Shillong, Feb 20: The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed shock and deep anguish over the sudden passing of Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon.
“(We are) shocked and deeply anguished by the sudden demise of Dr. Ricky Andrew Jones Syngkon, Member of Parliament from Shillong constituency,” BJP state president Rikman G Momin said on Friday.
“We remember Dr Syngkon fondly as one of the foremost academicians of our state, as a man who was always brimming with life and a human being whose warmth touched one and all,” Momin said in a condolence statement.
Dr Syngkon was a true believer of God and worked hard towards keeping the interest of Meghalaya’s indigenous communities at the forefront of national affairs, Momin added.
“His demise has left a void in state politics that will be hard to fill,” he said, praying for Dr Syngkon’s soul to rest in peace.
Meanwhile, Minister in-charge Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sanbor Shullai has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden demise of Syngkon, describing him as a “renowned social, political and religious leader, a philosopher, a guide and a protector”.
“It greatly pains me to convey my sincere feeling and great sorrow at the sudden demise of our beloved,” Shullai wrote in a condolence message.
“He was dynamism personified — frank, candid, a superb orator full of enthusiasm, and a courageous person calling a spade a spade.”
Shullai recalled Dr Syngkon’s humanitarian commitment: “He will be remembered for his impeccable service, his faith in secularism and pluralism, and as a guardian to the poor, the needy and the weaker sections.”
He added a personal reflection saying, “God knew and saw your sufferings… It’s true death leaves a heartache that can never heal, but love leaves a golden memory that nobody can steal.”
On behalf of his family and the people of South Shillong constituency, Shullai conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved family, praying that “God Almighty will guide, console and strengthen them in this darkest hour.” He closed with, “The golden memory of your smiles will ever linger in our hearts.”
