Body recovered from abandoned coal mine

Jowai, May 10: An unidentified body was recovered from an abandoned coal mine at Moolait Bri Sumer in East Jaintia Hills.

The body was initially spotted floating inside a partially water-filled abandoned mine on Saturday afternoon, prompting a recovery operation on Sunday.

The recovery operation was conducted with assistance from State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) personnel, police said.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination and investigation into the incident is under way, district SP Pankaj Rakhania said in a statement.
