BSF nabs Bangla national in Shillong

Shillong, Dec 14: BSF personnel arrested a suspected Bangladeshi national from near Anjali petrol pump in the city on Thursday.

Acting on specific intelligence, troops of Sector HQ Jowai apprehended Munna Islam (20) from Narayanganj, Bangladesh.

He admitted to crossing the Indo-Bangla border in August 2024, after the political unrest in Bangladesh to seek better job opportunities in India.

In a separate incident, the BSF troops foiled a smuggling attempt by seizing contraband items valued at ₹3.74 lakh at Baghmara in South Garo Hills and Dawki in East Khasi Hills district.

The items, including fish, vacuum flasks, blankets, garlic, biri and miscellaneous edible items, were intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh across the international border, the BSF said.
