BWSSB becomes ‘first Indian water utility’ to get ISO 50001 certification

Bengaluru, Apr 17: The BWSSB on Friday said it has achieved a historic milestone by becoming “the first water utility” in India to receive the internationally recognised ISO 50001:2018 certification.

In a statement, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board said the certification, issued on April 14 by Bureau Veritas, recognises the board’s robust energy management systems.

The certification specifically acknowledges BWSSB’s operation and maintenance of its bulk water supply pumping stations at three key locations—TK Halli, Harohalli and Tataguni—meeting international standards.

It also covers critical support functions at the head office in Cauvery Bhavan, as well as the continuous supply of water across the Greater Bengaluru area.

Earlier in the day, BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar, along with senior officials, met Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and formally presented the certificate, expressing gratitude for his support and guidance.

Commending the achievement, Shivakumar said, “Securing the prestigious ISO 50001:2018 certification is a significant milestone that reflects the government’s commitment to building a world-class and sustainable water infrastructure for Bengaluru.”

“By efficiently managing large-scale bulk water supply systems, BWSSB is setting a national benchmark while ensuring reliable and uninterrupted water services to millions. This milestone advances our vision of transforming Bengaluru into a future-ready, climate-resilient global metropolis,” he added.

Last year, BWSSB became “the first water board” in India to receive certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for its piped drinking water supply management system. (PTI)
