Cathedral seeks action in ‘desecration’ of church

Shillong, Dec 28: The All Saints’ Cathedral, Shillong has vehemently condemned the recent incident of chanting “Jay Shri Ram” inside a church at Mawlynnong and termed it as similar to “acts of disturbances” in churches across the country.

“(We are) very sad at what has been done in the Church at Mawlynnong, and we denounce it vehemently. It happened at a time when Christian churches and institutions in many places in the country are also experiencing similar acts of disturbances in their worship and programmes, by members of the Hindu groups,” said Bishop Purely Lyngdoh in a statement.

Referring to an Assam-based Hindu organisation “threatening the local durbar that looks after Mawjymbuin cave, if not allowed to perform Puja there” he said, “It seems that there is a connected trend now all over the country to intensify such acts and methods.”

Alleging that it could be a “pre-meditated” act, the Bishop urged the state government to book the culprits involved in such acts to deter any “future desecration of any places of worship.”
