Centre sanctions 782 km roads, 88 bridges in Meghalaya

Shillong, Oct 24: In a major boost to the state’s rural connectivity, the Centre has sanctioned 88 roads measuring 782 km and 55 bridges under PMGSY-III with an estimated investment of ₹1,057 crore in Meghalaya. The road and bridge projects have been sanctioned by the Ministry of Rural Development in order accelerate economic growth in the North-Eastern region.

Under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) III, 55 roads of 443.26 km with an
estimated investment of ₹412.34 crore had already been sanctioned in the state. “The projects under PMGSY-III will have a transformative impact on the region, contributing to the growth and prosperity of the North-Eastern region and cementing the government’s commitment to inclusive development,” according to an official statement.


According the ministry, this initiative would also improve access to essential services like healthcare, education, and markets in the rural areas. The projects are also expected to foster economic development, trade, and commerce by bridging the gap between remote villages and urban centres in the states of the region. They also aim at creating employment opportunities and stimulate local economies to realise
Government of India’s vision of a prosperous North East and a Viksit Bharat.
