Secretariat, Unity Mall and Sports Complex among sites reviewed; CM calls projects “foundation for Meghalaya’s future”
Shillong, July 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday toured multiple flagship infrastructure projects coming up in New Shillong, inspecting construction progress at the New Secretariat Complex, Unity Mall and the Sports Complex at Umsawli, among other ongoing works in the township.
The Chief Secretary, the Commissioner & Secretary of the Urban Affairs Department, senior officials and representatives of the executing agencies accompanied him during the review.

At the New Secretariat Complex, Sangma took stock of the construction timeline and stressed that quality could not be compromised even as work is pushed to meet deadlines. Once ready, the complex is meant to house government departments under a single roof, an arrangement officials say will improve coordination and make services more accessible to citizens.
The Chief Minister also walked through the Unity Mall project, which is being positioned as a marketplace for the state’s artisans, weavers, entrepreneurs and self-help groups to sell their products. Officials expect the facility to give local enterprise and tourism a boost while opening up livelihood opportunities.
At Umsawli, Sangma reviewed work on the Sports Complex, which is intended to offer modern training and competition facilities for young athletes. The government has repeatedly flagged the project as part of its push to position Meghalaya as a regional sporting hub.

Briefed on the broader progress of development works across New Shillong Township, the Chief Minister instructed executing agencies to coordinate closely, hold to quality benchmarks, and speed up construction without cutting corners on safety or timelines.
Speaking to officials during the visit, Sangma said the projects taking shape in New Shillong were laying the groundwork for the state’s future, arguing that the administrative, commercial and sporting infrastructure being built would strengthen governance, create jobs and improve residents’ quality of life.
