Shillong, Aug 12: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today inaugurated the Block Integrated Development Complex at the Mairang C&RD Block Office and advanced healthcare facilities at Tirot Sing Memorial Hospital, Mairang, in Eastern West Khasi Hills, marking a significant step towards equitable development and accessible healthcare in the state.

The new healthcare units include a Sick NewBorn Care Unit (SNCU), Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU), and High Dependency Unit (HDU). These state-of-the-art facilities aim to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates, lower healthcare costs and eliminate the need for long-distance travel for specialized treatment.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasized his government’s commitment to bring essential services closer to the people and ensure equitable development across all districts. He noted that these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to improve public service delivery, upgrade healthcare infrastructure, and promote balanced socio-economic growth.
The chief minister highlighted investments over the past seven years and announced upcoming projects, including a new DC office in Mairang, a district Convention Center, improved street lighting, the Shillong Secretariat Project in Mawdiangdiang, support for traditional institutions like Hima Nongklaw, tourism opportunities through CM Elevate, and expansion of PMAY (Awas Plus) to include 2.8 lakh new beneficiaries.
Health Minister Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh hailed the inauguration as a milestone in healthcare transformation and praised the medical team’s dedication. She underscored the vision of accessible healthcare for all citizens of the state.
Participating in the celebrations, Community and Rural Development minister A T Mondol emphasized on the importance of collaborative governance, while local MLA and Chairman of State Planning Board Metbah Lyngdoh called for further infrastructure upgrades, including roads and lighting. Sports minister Shakliar Warjri noted the boost to health and youth outcomes under the current government of Conrad Sangma.
The program also featured Marborsing Marbaniang, Traditional Artist and North East Young Talent Artistes Awardee, and had the presence of senior government officials, including Sibhi Chakravarthy Sadhu, Secretary & Director, C&RD Department; Anita Kharpor, Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District; and Dr. Laureate R. Hynniewta, MCS, Block Development Officer, Mairang C&RD Block.
In her address, Dr. Kharsahnoh noted that the newly established critical care units will strengthen both neonatal and adult healthcare services in the district, helping to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates and improve patient outcomes.
She emphasized that the facilities will reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment, lower healthcare costs, and make specialized care more accessible to local residents as well as those in neighboring districts.
The Block Integrated Development Complex will enhance administrative efficiency, while the new healthcare units—SNCU, PICU, AICU, and HDU—are equipped with up-to-date medical technology and staffed by trained professionals, making quality healthcare more accessible for residents of Eastern West Khasi Hills and beyond.
