Crackdown on illegal sand mining, timber smuggling in WG Hills

Tura, Jan 18: Forest sleuths, with assistance from district administration and police personnel, have launched a crackdown against illegal sand/earth mining and timber smuggling, leading to significant recoveries in parts of West Garo Hills district.

The joint operation against unauthorised extraction of natural resources was launched raids in Gumaijhora and Chibinang–Chanupara (Gopgopara) areas in the district.

In Gumaijhora area, officials inspected sites suspected of illegal earth mining and collected written statements and photographic evidence for further enquiry. Illegal sand mining was also detected along a nearby stream. Although those involved fled the site on the arrival of the authorities, extraction tools were seized.

The officials later traced a JCB machine allegedly used in the illegal activity to its owner, and a summon has been issued for formal verification.

In Chanupara (Gopgopara) area, an animal cart carrying timber logs without valid permits was intercepted and seized.

The enforcement team also disrupted an illegal earth mining operation, resulting in the detention of one JCB, one dumper truck loaded with earth, and one tractor.

All seized vehicles have been taken to the Hollaidonga Range Office. The landholder and vehicle owners have been summoned for enquiry.

Forest officials said a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the ownership of the seized machinery and the source of the timber, adding that similar enforcement drives will continue in the district.
