Tura, March 16: West Garo Hills district administration has extended the curfew imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) following incidents of violence and disturbance of public peace in the region.
According to an official order issued by District Magistrate Vibhor Agarwal, the curfew has been extended across the entire district as a precautionary measure to prevent further escalation of violence and restore normalcy.
The curfew will remain in force from 6:00 AM on March 17 until 6:00 AM on March 18, unless withdrawn earlier by the administration. During this period, residents have been directed to remain indoors, and movement outside homes within the district limits will be prohibited.
However, the administration has announced a relaxation of curfew from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on March 17 to allow normal public movement and essential activities. Educational institutions, government offices, banks and other establishments will be permitted to function during the relaxation period.
The district administration said the decision to extend the curfew was taken after reviewing reports from law enforcement agencies indicating that stringent preventive measures were necessary to maintain public order and ensure the safety of life and property.
Police and executive magistrates have been directed to strictly enforce the order. Authorities warned that any violation of the curfew will attract penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other relevant laws.
The order, issued on March 16, has been enforced with immediate effect amid continuing security concerns in the district.
