Detox centres in civil hospitals soon

Shillong, Oct 4:Ten doctors from Meghalaya have been sent to Tezpur, Assam to undergo a certified course on psychiatric and de-addiction treatment.  This was part of the state government’s move to improve the detox centres at civil hospitals in Shillong, Jowai, Nongstoin, Baghmara and Tura, to help drug users get access to the facilities before being admitted to a rehabilitation centre.

Informing this here on Thursday, health minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “These doctors are just completing their course and are coming back to the state.”

Meanwhile, she said, Tura Civil Hospital has already started a wing for detoxing and treatment for drug addiction.

“We stand committed to our DREAM policy,” she added.

‘Covid facilities used efficiently’

Meanwhile, the minister said all facilities installed during the Covid-19 pandemic were being utilised efficiently and effectively by the Health department.

“We have constantly taken an audit of all of the facilities that we have installed,” she told reporters.

Referring to her recent visit to a hospital at Jengjal in Garo Hills, she said the infrastructure there would be converted to a district hospital.

Meanwhile, she informed about proposals for handing over infrastructure at Ganesh Das hospital to the upcoming medical college and that some facilities have already been turned into a drug storage.

Further, the minister informed that the government is also considering setting up an active skill lab at the Umsawli facility.

Referring to her discussions with companies seeking manpower from Meghalaya, including in health sector, she said the infrastructure at Umsawli could be converted into a skill lab having training facilities for not only nurses but also agriculture worker.

“Right now, they are asking us for manpower for agriculture and tea sector and we have both leave pickers and farmers working in fields…,” she stated.
