Rs 2.5-cr heroin, currency notes of South Korea, Kazakhstan, Myanmar seized
Shillong, Sep 28: Two drug peddlers from Manipur were arrested and substantial amount of heroin and currency notes of four different countries seized from them at 8th Mile in West Jaintia Hills district on Sunday.
Acting on intelligence inputs gathered over four days, a police team stopped a TATA vehicle (ML05 K 2315) coming from Silchar in Assam and seized the heroin worth around Rs 2.5 crore, district superintendent of police (SP) Jagpal Dhanao said.
The arrested persons were identified as Chuchung Serto from Nakhunjang, Kangpokpi, and Thanggin Towthang from Songpehh, Churachandpur.
Around 50 soap boxes that tested positive for heroin were recovered from the vehicle’s running board. The seized heroin weighed 513 gram.
Besides, Rs 6,775 in cash, 3,000 in South Korean Won, 500 in Kazakhstan Tenge, 10 Burmese currency notes, and two mobile phones were seized from their possession.
Recovery of the currency notes of different countries revealed the deep-rooted and widespread network of the drugs racket operated by their gang.
A case under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act is being registered and follow-up investigations are in progress to trace the supply chain and identify any larger network or cross-border links, the SP said.
The department reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the community from narcotics and calls on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, he added.
