Shillong, Aug 12: The Meghalaya High Court has ordered erection of crash barriers at all vulnerable points along the under-construction Shillong-Dawki road within next six weeks.
The bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh passed the order while hearing a PIL in this regard on Tuesday.
Representing NHIDCL, Deputy Solicitor General of India (DSGI) Dr N Mozika told the court that the contract for the barriers had been awarded and work would be finished in six weeks.
“Contract has been awarded to ensure that crash barriers are erected at all vulnerable points. The said work will be completed within six weeks,” Dr Mozika submitted in a status report.
He also informed the court that NHIDCL had provided a fully-equipped ambulance to the PHC at Pongkung and had cleared a road washed out recently.
The village bypass road had also been completed, with photographs submitted as proof.
On damage claims, the court noted PWD had sent an estimate of Rs 1.72 crore to the ADC, East Khasi Hills.
Dr Mozika said NHIDCL would conduct its own assessment of damage to Mawlieh LP School and file a report on the next date.
The court asked the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills to act on a PWD letter written on May 20, 2026 on the issue.
The court also directed NHIDCL to pay Rs 1 lakh to Amicus Curiae Philemon Nongbri “considering the assistance given… including site visits”, within one week.
The matter has been listed for September 7 for further hearing.
