Govt seeks MeECL plan to meet public expectations

Shillong, Aug 12: Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh has asked the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to draw a new plan to improve its performance to meet public expectations.

The Power Minister issued the directive during a review meeting with MeECL officials.

“The overall review was good. There are a few things we have taken note of. We have instructed the CMD to come back with a new plan that we discussed today and how we are going to implement it,” Lyngdoh said.

“MeECL is a very old unit and we have to ensure its overall performance is up to the expectation of the people,” he said.

On generation, he said all units are currently operational and work is underway on new projects.

Expressing regret over death of three persons in a recent accident, he said, “We have already paid compensation to the family members as per policy — Rs 2.5 lakh for each.”

Addressing frequent outages, Lyngdoh pointed to Ri-Bhoi area where transmission lines pass through dense forest.

“The line from Stage III to Nongpoh goes through very thick forest. We cannot avoid damage during cyclones or heavy storms, but the department is trying its best. We will come out with some solution in a few days’ time,” he said.
