Eve of Eid celebrations, Garo Hills security reviewed as authorities encourage peace initiatives

Tura, March 19: With Eid celebrations across the country just a day away, and keeping in mind last week’s widespread violence in Tura, Chibinang and Williamnagar, authorities in Garo Hills held a high level review meeting on Thursday evening at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Tura during which maintenance of peace was one of the core issues.

Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal chaired a high-level meeting to review the prevailing security situation in the district, focusing on coordination between the administration, police, and central forces, as well as preparedness for the upcoming Eid festival.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Superintendent of Police and representatives from various security forces, to ensure seamless coordination and address any operational concerns.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and ensuring adequate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents during the festive period. Magistrates have also been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.

Highlighting the role of the community, the Deputy Commissioner appreciated the efforts of citizens in opposing violence and promoting harmony. He noted that several peace meetings and prayer gatherings across the district have sent a strong message against violence.

He further informed that the administration has been actively engaging with communities in various areas, including the plain belt, to restore normalcy.

A recent meeting in Shamnagar with church leaders and community members was described as positive, with a collective commitment to peace and stability.

Addressing concerns regarding misinformation, the Deputy Commissioner stated that curbing fake news remains a top priority for the administration. He informed that the internet services, which were temporarily suspended, have now been restored to facilitate access to verified information and reduce the spread of rumours. The public has been urged to rely only on official sources and trusted news platforms for accurate updates.

Contact numbers of local police stations and control rooms have also been shared for addressing grievances and clarifications.

On the issue of curfew, it was informed that night curfew remains in force as a precautionary measure to closely monitor the situation and prevent any disturbances. Security deployment continues across the district to ensure the safety of all citizens.

The administration is reviewing the curfew on a daily basis and assured that any relaxation or changes will be communicated to the public in a timely manner.

The Deputy Commissioner appealed to the public to continue cooperating with the authorities, refrain from spreading unverified information, and uphold peace and communal harmony in the district.
