Shillong, Aug 8: The monthly Farmers’ Market completed its eighth edition in Shillong on Friday, with strong turnout and direct sales of fresh seasonal produce continuing to boost farmer incomes.
The market brought together growers from across the state selling cabbage, maize, pineapple, fruits, vegetables, and value-added organic products.
The Farmers’ Market was organised by 1917 iTEAMS under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, with support from the Meghalaya Farmers’ (Empowerment) Commission.
The initiative aligns with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s vision to shorten the farm-to-consumer gap and create sustainable livelihoods through better market access.
According to farmers, the platform has been a major boost.
Aroma Talang of Thadmuthlong B, West Jaiñtia Hills, who started organic farming in 2025, called it a “very special experience.”
“At a time when chemical fertilisers and pesticides are widely used, organic farming is a natural and healthier alternative for both farmers and consumers,” she said, thanking the department and government for the support.
First-time seller Store Kharlukhi of Kdiap, Thadlaskein said demand was high.
“Some of my products were sold out within just a few hours of the market opening,” she said, adding she looks forward to joining future editions.
The market is also expanding reach through a tie-up with hyperlocal delivery platform SOMOI, which delivers produce to households across Shillong and creates jobs for local youth as delivery partners.
Officials said the market has recorded a cumulative footfall of over 5000 visitors till date. Consumers cited freshness, affordability, and direct interaction with farmers as key draws.
From a monthly sale to a community platform, the Farmers’ Market is now promoting organic farming, women’s participation, and local entrepreneurship while giving consumers access to fresh, locally grown produce.
