Former Archer Shyam Lal Meena dies

New Delhi, May 26: Former Indian archer Shyam Lal Meena, who represented the country at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, died after a prolonged illness.

He was 61.

Meena breathed his last on Sunday night at a hospital.

“Remembering Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Late Shri Shyam Lal Meena, who represented India at the 1988 Seoul Olympics,” the Archery Association of India posted on X alongside a photograph of the former archer.

“His legacy in Indian archery will always be honoured.”

Born in Kevadia village in Rajasthan’s Banswara district, Meena was part of the Indian men’s recurve team alongside Limba Ram and Rajat Haldar that won a bronze medal at the 1987 Asian Archery Championships in Kolkata.

That podium finish helped India qualify for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, marking the country’s archery debut at the Summer Games.

Meena was conferred the Arjuna Award in 1989 for his contribution to the sport. (PTI)
