UG courses of Civil, Mechanical engineering get AICTE approval

Shillong, May 15: In a significant boost to technical education in the state, the Shillong Government College of Engineering (SGCE) has received the approval from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to launch its academic session this year itself.

The state’s first government engineering college was granted approval for starting under graduate (UG) courses of Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering for 2025-26 session.

Announcing this on X, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, “Thrilled to announce that Shillong Government College of Engineering has received the Letter of Approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for launching Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering courses, marking the first government engineering college in the state.”

The AICTE in its letter of approval said the UG courses of Civil and Electrical engineering shall have an intake capacity of 30 each.

Ten per cent of the seats have to be allowed over and above the approved intake to accommodate reservation for EWS (economically weaker section) as per the state government policy.

The approval for starting the UG courses is valid for two years for getting affiliation with the respective university/board of technical education (BTE) and board of technical education & training (BTET), the letter stated.

Meanwhile, the AICTE has laid down certain conditions for the college to run the UG courses.
