Govt targets completion of airport expansion by 2026 end

Shillong, Sept 2: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Tuesday informed that the tender process for Shillong Airport expansion project has been initiated and work is slated to be completed by 2026 end.

Speaking to reporters, the minister said “By the end of 2026 we hope that the expansion of the Shillong Airport will also be completed and that will take the experience of tourists to the next level.”

Pointing out that Shillong has been voted the most favoured tourist destination in the country despite having a proper airport, Lyngdoh said, “It is a rare achievement for a state that is yet to have a completely functional airport.”

The government has also announced plans to introduce helicopter services to popular tourist spots, including Umiam, Sohra, Dawki, Shillong, and Mawsynram.

“Our intention is that we speed matters up. We are talking to the aviation ministry,” the minister said.
