Govt works on ‘deficiencies’ in engineering college

Shillong, Mar 10: The state government is working on some infrastructure deficiencies of Shilong Government College of Engineering (SGCE) as pointed out by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), education minister Rakkam A Sangma said in reply to a question in the state assembly on Monday.

The AICTE raised the issue during its scrutiny meetings on 22 January and 4 February 2025, the minister said.

Earlier, chief minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated some buildings such as Academic Block, Administrative Block and Boys’ & Girls’ Hostels of the engineering college on 16 January 2023.

Service connections of SGCE, including water supply and electricity are in place, according to the minister.

Of the total project cost Rs 26 crore, the Centre has released Rs 23.4 crore as per the 90:10 funding pattern.

On December 26, 2024, SGCE applied for AICTE approval to start two technical courses – Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

Altogether 55 posts have been created and the government has conveyed approval for establishment of SGCE, he said.

Additional director of Polytechnic & Shillong Engineering College has been asked to hold additional charge as principal of the engineering college.

Approval has been granted for appointment of 13 existing faculty of Shillong Polytechnic at SGCE.

Meanwhile, NEHU has conveyed its approval for provisional affiliation for the college for three years.
