HC allows use of alternative IDs for Aadhaar applicants

Shillong, Aug 31: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to continue to accept alternative identification documents for individuals, who could not produce an Aadhaar number or card.

The court issued the directive after hearing a PIL on Saturday in continuation of its interim order issued on 21 July this year.

In the order, the court had permitted consideration of alternative documents by authorities concerned till an Aadhaar card is issued to all Aadhaar applicants, whose applications are pending.

The order was issued by a division bench comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh after hearing the PIL filed by social activist Greneth M Sangma.

The Unique Identification Authority of India has filed its affidavit-in-opposition even before directions on that behalf were made by the Court.

The PIL will be listed for further hearing on September 17, 2025.
