High mast national flag hoisted at Tura

All district headquarters to have high mast flags: CM  

Tura, Nov 18: In a proud moment for Garo Hills region, Tura on Tuesday became the second place in Meghalaya to hoist a high mast national flag. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma officially hoisted the high mast flag installed at PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex at Dakopgre, Tura.

While informing that Tura is the second place to have a high mast national flag, he also announced that similar high mast flags will be hoisted in Jowai and all other district headquarters.

“The national flag is a symbol of our identity and it symbolises our unity, history, sovereignty, freedom and values and hoisting this high mast flag shows our respect and honour for our great nation India,” he said.

West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal and superintendent of police Abraham T Sangma also attended the programme.

The chief minister also highlighted the various government initiatives for beatification of Tura town.

“The second phase of the Tura Beautification project will start soon and under this second phase we have allocated Rs 16 crore for beautification of Tura Bazar,” he said.

Beautification of Tura Bazar will include installation of street lights, pavement renovation and changing of the overall facade of Tura Super Market.

In the third phase, beautification of the road stretch – Araimile Junction till the end of PA Sangma Road  – will be taken up. 

He also said Paint My City Campaign will continue where buildings, boundary walls, retaining walls will be painted and he solicited the cooperation of the people in this campaign.

The Chief Minister also highlighted ongoing and completed infrastructure work in Dakopgre area.

“Dakopgre is a very important area of Tura town with a lot of developmental activities and infrastructure taking place here,” he said.

He informed that works for the additional secretariat are going on in full swing.

“Next to the MPSC Office building that was inaugurated last week, work is taking place in a rapid pace for the Convention Centre that will be an important venue to host important small to medium scale events and gatherings,” he said.

He also announced that the first 5 Star Hotel of Tura town will be set up by Hilton Group at the site of old Orchid Hotel at Dakopgre.

“We expect this hotel to be completed within 24 months,” he said.

Informing about the readiness of Tura town for the National Games in 2027, the Chief Minister said, “Work for extension of Pa Togan Nengminja Stadium for constructing additional galleries and other facilities is ongoing.”

The work for Multi-Disciplinary Indoor Stadium next to PA Sangma Stadium and Sunny Hill Indoor Stadium is also going on, he said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister urged the citizens of Tura town to cooperate and support the initiatives of the government especially the beautification projects.

“It is the responsibility of every citizen to keep Tura town clean without which all the other developmental projects or infrastructures will be meaningless,” he said.

Earlier, the programme began with the welcome address delivered by the chairman of the Tura Municipal Board, JD Sangma.

As part of the programme, the Chief Minister also flagged off a road sweeping machine.
