NEIGRIHMS security guard arrested for drunk driving

2 NEHU students, injured in accident, in critical condition

Shillong, Nov 18: A NEIGRIHMS security guard, whose vehicle hit two NEHU students while he was driving under influence of alcohol, was arrested and an attempt to murder case registered against him.

Permen M Sangma, the security guard employed at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), was arrested on Monday evening.

The two seriously injured students – Daritngen Pohdukhei and Stephanie Shadap – are stated to be in critical condition and remained unconscious till filing of this report.

East Khasi Hills police chief Vivek Syiem said the accused person was booked under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to murder.

The accused was staying in a barrack located inside the campus of North Eastern Hills University (NEHU).

The incident occurred around 7:30 pm at Gate No. 2 of NEHU campus, where Sangma’s vehicle struck the two students of Chemistry department of NEHU.

According to the medical examination report, Sangma was intoxicated at the time of the accident, with his blood alcohol level deemed unfit for driving.

The SP emphasized that this is not a simple traffic case, and further investigation is required to determine the circumstances of the incident.

“We will also see if there are any other reason because it is an open space, lighted area and to drive in such a high speed and not to see pedestrians walking it merit more investigation,” he said.

CCTV footage showed the car speeding towards the students, who were walking on the road. Before that, the car first crashed into a scooty and then into the gate.
