Guwahati, Nov 24: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has termed the NPP’s victory in Gambegre bye-election a “good comeback” for the party keeping in view the party’s defeat in Lok Sabha elections in both the seats of Meghalaya.
The BJP leader, who was addressing media on BJP’s performance in recently held elections across the country, noted that the NPP’s victory comes in the context of the Lok Sabha elections, where the party had faced significant challenges in Meghalaya.
In the bye-election, NPP candidate Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma secured a decisive win, garnering 12,678 votes and defeating Congress candidate Jingjang M Marak.
Gambegre bye-election attracted considerable attention, as it was the constituency vacated by former Congress MLA Saleng Sangma following his election to Lok Sabha from Tura seat.
Sarma’s remarks reflect an acknowledgment of the resilience of regional parties like the NPP in influencing the Northeast’s political landscape.
In Gambegre bypoll, while the Trinamool Congress candidate emerged second followed by Congress while the BJP candidate lost his security deposit by failing to secure even 1,000 votes.
