Shillong, Feb 4: A West Jaintia Hills court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife by setting her on fire nearly two decades ago.
The Court of the Sessions Judge, Jowai, presided over by N. A. Khan, convicted Stam Surong, a resident of Mukhla Nongrim village, in connection with Sessions Case No. 37 of 2015. The court found him guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for the murder of his wife.
In addition, the court imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on the convict.
According to police, the case dates back to September 8, 2006, when Surong allegedly poured kerosene on his wife and set her ablaze inside their residence at around 5 am. The victim, identified as Before Sari, reportedly disclosed details of the incident to her family members before she succumbed to her burn injuries.
The FIR was lodged by Barwill Singh Sari at the Ummulong Beat House, following which Jowai Police registered a case. The investigation was carried out by Sub-Inspector A. Rymbai, who later filed the chargesheet.
