Shillong, Oct 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has highlighted Meghalaya’s digital expansion and sought to draw attention to the state’s potential to emerge as an international digital gateway to Southeast Asia.
Addressing India Mobile Congress 2026 in New Delhi, Thursday, Sangma highlighted the rapid expansion of telecom and digital infrastructure in the state.
The meeting was chaired by Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia.
He said the number of mobile BTS sites in the state has nearly doubled to around 9,000, while optical fibre connectivity has expanded to 11,000 km.
Meghalaya’s tele-density has reached 88%, with 4G coverage crossing 98%, he said.
Sangma also pointed to the growing contribution of the technology sector to employment in the state. He said Meghalaya’s IT sector has generated nearly 22,000 jobs in recent years.
The state’s second IT Park, he said, was fully booked on the day it was inaugurated, signalling growing demand for technology and digital infrastructure.
Sangma also used the platform to highlight Meghalaya’s strategic location in the Northeast, suggesting the possibility of developing an international digital gateway in the region to strengthen connectivity with Southeast Asia.
He said the state’s digital transformation was aimed not only at improving connectivity but also at creating new opportunities in technology, employment and economic growth.
The Chief Minister’s participation at the India Mobile Congress comes as Meghalaya seeks to position itself as part of the Northeast’s emerging digital and technology ecosystem.
