James honoured at MDA meet

MDA has made progress on several long-pending issues over the years: CM

Shillong, June 27: Newly elected Rajya Sabha MP James K Sangma has assured the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) of working in close coordination with the state government to effectively raise issues related to the state and the North East in the Parliament.

“I will work in close coordination with the state government to ensure Meghalaya’s issues are strongly taken up in the Rajya Sabha,” Sangma said after his felicitation at an MDA meeting convened by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday.

He also expressed gratitude to the MDA legislators for helping him elected unopposed to the Upper House.

BJP ministers Alexander Laloo Hek and Sanbor Shullai, UDP president and cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh, representatives of HSPDP, other ministers and MLAs, and Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma were present on the occasion.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the meeting gave the coalition partners a platform to discuss issues of public importance, seek clarifications, and exchange views.

He said such interactions strengthen coordination and mutual trust among allies.

Congratulating the new MP, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that James K Sangma would be a “strong and effective voice for the state in the Rajya Sabha.”

Responding to questions on governance, Sangma said while no government can resolve every challenge overnight, the MDA has made progress on several long-pending issues.

He cited the completion of the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Shillong — stalled for nearly 35 years — as an example, and pointed to initiatives in road connectivity, education, healthcare and public infrastructure.

Sangma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating development and improving the quality of life in the state.
