Youth will influence polls, but all voters count: Kyrmen Shylla

Shillong, Jun 27: Every voter, regardless of age, has a decisive role in elections, UDP leader and Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla said Friday, while acknowledging that the youth’s numerical strength gives them significant influence.

Responding to questions on the role of young voters, Shylla said elections cannot be viewed through the lens of one demographic alone.

“When it comes to elections, each and every voter plays an important role. We cannot just count the youth or just count the elderly. Everyone who has a vote plays a part,” he said.

Shylla stressed that all citizens above 18 have an equal right to vote and are equally important in choosing representatives. He added that while the youth population is higher in Meghalaya and nationally, that does not diminish the value of other voters.

“All of them are equally important. But being higher in number, of course, the mind of the youth — whatever they have in mind — will carry weight and contribute to the election of representatives. Their contribution will be huge,” he said.

The MLA said the youth’s impact is not limited to the 2028 polls.

“Not only in 2028, in every election the youth will always contribute a lot and create a huge impact,” he added.
