Khasi-Jaintia Hills goes to polls today  

Fate of 272 candidates for ADC elections to be sealed by over 13 lakh voters  

Shillong, Feb 21: The fate of over 270 candidates of KHADC and JHADC elections will be sealed by over 13 lakh voters as the voting takes place in Khasi-Jaintia Hills region on Friday.

The voting will take place from 7 am till 4 pm in all the autonomous district council (ADC) constituencies, 29 each in KHADC and JHADC.

Altogether there are 272 candidates – 158 for KHADC and 114 for JHADC. There are only 12 women in the fray for KHADC while the number is only 7 for JHADC.

The respective chiefs of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) – Pynïaid Sing Syiem and Thombor Shiwat respectively – sitting Executive Members and sitting MLAs and MDCs are among the prominent contenders.

There are 2,281 polling stations in the 58 constituencies of KHADC and JHADC.

While the 29 constituencies in JHADC are very small, the size of the 29 constituencies in KHADC are as big as assembly constituencies.

The 29 ADC constituencies of JHADC are divided from the seven legislative assembly constituencies in Jaiñtia Hills, but the 29 ADC constituencies of KHADC formed almost the same areas of the 29 legislative assembly seats.

In KHADC, there are 1,798 polling stations while the JHADC has 483 polling stations.

A total of 129 polling stations have been identified as vulnerable and critical in areas under KHADC and 95 in the JHADC.

However, the government has assured adequate deployment of security forces is in place to ensure a free, fair and smooth conduct of the elections.

The KHADC has a total of 9,96,518 voters out of which 4,81,268 are male and 5,15,247 female.

The JHADC has 3,12,300 voters, including 1,51,079 male and 1,61,220 female.

There are also 4 third gender voters – 3 in KHADC and 1 in JHADC.

The counting of votes will be held on Monday and the term of both the Councils will expire on March 5, 2025.
