Landslides Batter Balughat Village in Garo Hills, MLA visits, announces relief

Ampati, July 12: Monsoon rains have left a trail of destruction in Balughat village, South West Garo Hills district, where landslides have torn through farmland and threatened homes.

On Saturday, Sanjay A. Sangma, MLA for the 54-Mahendraganj (ST) constituency, travelled to the village to survey the damage firsthand and meet with families whose lives have been upended by the disaster.

Walking through the affected areas, the legislator inspected the scale of destruction and spoke with residents about the toll the landslides have taken. He announced financial assistance for the victims, to be disbursed as immediate relief while longer-term support is arranged.

No deaths have been reported as a result of the landslides, officials said.

Sangma did not mince words about the risks that remain. With the monsoon far from over, he cautioned villagers to stay alert and take precautions against further landslides. He also pledged to raise the matter with district authorities, pushing for additional relief and rehabilitation measures to help the village recover in the weeks ahead.
