Man held for issuing bomb threat in city

Accused SMS sender identified as part of ‘Ri-Bhoi Gang’

Shillong, Jan 23: City police arrested a person on Thursday for allegedly issuing threat via SMS to plant multiple bombs across Shillong city.

The accused Edward Maiong, 37, was arrested from Lower New Colony, Laitumkhrah after a police complaint about SMS threat sent from an unknown number.

The sender, who identified himself as part of ‘Ri-Bhoi Gang’, warned that multiple bombs will be planted within Shillong city, according to an FIR lodged on Wednesday, said East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem.

Special Operation Team (SOT) of East Khasi Hills swung into action and launched a search operation.

“After an overnight operation, the SOT was able to zero down on Edward Maiong today,” Syiem said.

The police also found his mobile phone used in the crime.

The SP, meanwhile, has not ruled out Edward’s links with any militant outfit.

Police are conducting intensified patrolling and heavy checking at all points to thwart any attempt to disrupt the Republic Day celebration, the SP said while requesting public cooperation in ensuring law and order.
