Meghalaya acquires Mawkhanu paddy fields for devp projects

Shillong, Nov 26: The state government has approved a proposal to acquire paddy fields in Mawkhanu, New Shillong Township, from 17 farmers who have agreed to sell their land for development projects.

After chairing a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the acquisition was a result of continued discussions with the farmers, who were initially hesitant to part with their land.

“The farmers have now agreed to directly sell the land to the government, seeing the large projects underway in the area,” Sangma said, adding that the cabinet had approved the sale of the paddy fields.

The acquisition is expected to facilitate the expansion of development projects in the New Shillong Township area.
