Shillong, June 9: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) National President Conrad K. Sangma has welcomed the decision of the United Naga Council (UNC), Naga tribal hohos, civil society organisations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to facilitate the release of 14 Kuki civilians who had been detained in Senapati.
In a statement, Conrad Sangma described the move as a humanitarian gesture that reflects the longstanding Naga traditions of compassion, dignity, reconciliation, and respect for human life. He said the decision sends a powerful message of hope to the people of Manipur and the wider Northeast at a time when communities continue to grapple with the impact of conflict.
The NPP leader commended the UNC and Naga organisations for demonstrating restraint, wisdom, and moral courage, saying their actions showed that peace and humanity can prevail even in difficult circumstances.
At the same time, Sangma renewed his appeal to Kuki civil society organisations, community leaders, and concerned groups to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of six Naga civilians who remain in detention.
“The release of the 14 Kuki civilians was not merely an administrative decision but a humanitarian act rooted in the belief that innocent civilians should never become victims of conflict,” he said, expressing hope that the same humanitarian spirit would guide the safe return of the six Naga men to their families.
He noted that the continued detention of civilians prolongs the suffering of families and communities and delays the healing process that Manipur urgently needs. He said the release of the remaining captives would serve as a significant confidence-building measure and help restore trust between communities.
Reaffirming the NPP’s commitment to peace and reconciliation, Sangma said the party would continue to support efforts aimed at dialogue, communal harmony, and the protection of every citizen, irrespective of tribe, community, or faith.
He called on all stakeholders to seize the moment and demonstrate that humanity is stronger than conflict, adding that compassion remains the foundation on which lasting peace can be built.
