Shillong, Sept 30: Lawyers in Meghalaya have decided to boycott all judicial work from October 1, intensifying their demand for the removal of Advocate General Amit Kumar. The Bar said the matter concerns rectifying the functioning of the Advocate General’s office and protecting the welfare and dignity of lawyers.
The Bar will also hold a mass rally in Shillong on October 5 and circulate the unanimously adopted resolution to all Bar Associations in the state for compliance.
The decision was taken at an emergent meeting on Wednesday of the Joint Executive Committee of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association.
The Bar said that despite assurances from the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Ministers weeks ago that Amit Kumar would stop representing the government before any court, the Advocate General continued to appear for the state before the High Court and District Court in Shillong. He also appeared before the Commercial Court in Shillong on September 30.
Calling this a total defiance of the assurance and a direct disregard of the understanding reached with the Bar, the Committee said the continued appearances amounted to an insult to the legal fraternity.
The Bar therefore resolved to abstain from judicial work statewide, exempting only bail and urgent matters.
